Why the Democratic Party Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: A Deep Dive.

This action by the DNC to withhold the public viewing of its internal autopsy report concerning the 2024 election is shocking yet entirely predictable. Opposed to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus behaves closer to a publicity machine rather than an electoral entity devoted to building a volunteer base for winning elections.

A Climate Resistant to Internal Critique

Reluctant to depart from the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has remained within the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Releasing the findings would have indicated whether party leaders actually want to foster open debate about the errors which allowed Donald Trump to win re-election. Yet, the committee is acting under the pretense that there are no lessons to glean from the tragic debacle of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If the answer is no, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," a justification that has been offered for withholding the analysis.

Key Issues a Report Might Have Examined

An autopsy report with any value would confront certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Electoral Alienation: The loss among millions of voters who supported the party's candidate during the previous election was decisive in the narrowly decided 2024 election.
  • The Insistence to Run: The stubborn choice of a party leader to seek re-election, alongside an extremely delayed exit, is viewed as robbing the party's base of a genuine choice.
  • Losing Touch With Core Democratic Voters: While facing rising costs, the campaign reportedly ceding to powerful financial backers while failing to address the role of big business.
  • The Gaza Effect: The failure to reconsider an approach concerning a ongoing war reportedly led to losing many voters, particularly among youth voters, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Youth Backing: Polling data shows a significant drop-off of support for the party among young voters.

A Record Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold is consistent with a pattern to avoid difficult realities. It recalls an episode where virtually every elected Democrat in Congress went along with an incumbent's determination to seeking another term until a disastrous televised debate compelled a reversal.

Concurrently, large majorities within the party's base had been continually telling surveyors of their opposition to the incumbent to run again.

Financial Questions

A substantive autopsy might also probe matters regarding where money went, including what sums went to high-priced advisors as well as ad buyers over the course of an electoral effort that burned through a colossal sum in a short period.

The Broader Problem

Fundamentally, the secrecy surrounding this report points to a submission toward the existing power structure that oversaw a losing electoral effort. The implication for ordinary supporters – including countless small donors – is that they cannot be trusted to see the lessons the leadership say they discovered based on hundreds of interviews based on extensive interviews.

An organization unable to honestly assess its own failings is unlikely to climb out of the cycle which was so beneficial to the rival party.
