Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered many other marked vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior official commented the vandalism left him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
