TikTok Influencers Driving Parallel Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug

An underground economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.

Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share comparison images, administration instructions and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an investigational injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Worries

Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of uncertain source.

Some experts said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Enforcement

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers try to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the service has taken down problematic content and banned associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using the platform's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with thousands of users, populated with images of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed guides for preparing or injecting at residence.

After moments of entering one community, a seller shared contact information, where most transactions take place. The seller provided an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Pricing

Inside these communities, posts display dark colored packages with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Security Actions

A representative for Telegram said it actively monitored harmful content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to current cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already encountered patients injured by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly significant health risks”.
