Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
