Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's ODI Team Versus Team India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a shock inclusion.
Performance Issues Result in Omission
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international side after scoring just one run in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a best innings of 47 in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has played 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Team Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia look for a answer to their opening batting issues.
Pace Returns and Fitness Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to seal a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
