Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – How a Plastic Axe United Generations Among Rock Generations

Marking two decades after the legendary game first launched in North America, offering everyday gamers the means to become rock legends. Figuratively speaking, but try telling that someone who has nailed Free Bird’s four-minute instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Developed by the developers, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues scrolling down the screen synchronized to a song. Every sequence corresponded to specific notes, producing the feel of an authentic live show.

Harmonix had already tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, later acquired by Activision in 2006. Together, they laid the foundations for a surprising massively profitable franchise that had a significant influence on numerous of the artists included, showcasing decades-old groups to a new generation of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, recalls the initial financial challenges in securing the songs – even though initial releases mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced all the music because the dollar figure prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights alone, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure acts such as legendary groups – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. However, when the game took off, album purchases and radio play were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was the number of parents got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the songs they adored. It evolved into a multigenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Finds a New Audience

Irish group the Answer included their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician the artist recalls the way the game brought classic rock to the forefront: “The game provided a larger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered music that was past it, but then once it got featured on the game and teenagers were finding it, suddenly it became trendy. That legitimised it, and got rid of the ‘dad rock’ tag. It provided our catalog a new life.”

At that time, the Answer’s first record remained not available in the US, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the group during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies were playing the song during travel, and some of them knew us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles and Lasting Impact

Music's heavyweight names soon capitalised on the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on each band’s catalogue and associated stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the group more money compared to their studio albums. It sold well over 500,000 copies in its first week, and sales of Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% at a time as the industry faced decline.

The series continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality completed a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough anthem popularized through the game – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with similar gameplay and extensive customisation options. The song is challenging even in expert mode, not to mention performed at double speed and without missing every one of the thousands of cues. They stated requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. If you play other games, it doesn't imply you should pick up a real gun and enlist,” says musician Herman Li.

DragonForce previously completed a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames was featured on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it made them widely recognized. “I recall our distributors informing us that our selling albums rapidly,” he says. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we performed right ahead of top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero was so immense that it risked eclipsing all other the band has done. Recently, the song was used in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought otherwise, but now I accept it,” Li says. “Should you just hear a single track, that's fine – everyone’s got their own musical journey and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Impact of a Plastic Guitar

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for cars, clothes or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what we were aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of being a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators felt that humans have a natural human desire to make music, and they wanted to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games came out over a mere half-decade between 2005 and 2010, featuring spin-offs such as the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Titles such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the scene alive, with set to be a new product from the founders on the way. Recently formed developers has entered production on its debut music game. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry following the classic?

“We thought those games could be similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” he remarks. “With abundant new music that it could be perennially popular, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason for it to persist for future fans.”
